Macbook Pro 5,1 2.4ghz
(Late 2008/early 2009)

Additional 2GB RAM recently installed (now at 4GB)

Now running Snow Leopard.

Started noticing it would just turn off with no low battery warning. Would start back up from battery ok, but then would soon just shut off again.

Seems to run fine off mains.

Tried the reset method of removing battery and mains and pressing power for 5 secs +....no joy.

Here are my power details:

Installed iStat Pro widget and it says the battery health is at 48%... does that mean it needs replacing?

I cant seem to do a calibration of the battery as i cant seem to run it down, as the machine just cuts off before all power in the battery is depleted.

I know others have had probs with batteries after installing Snow Leopard, so just wanted to check it whether it was a legitimate case for a new battery or a problem with Snow Leopard?

I think your battery's toast, this is not a snow leopard issue, just a crappy battery Apple put in to save a couple of bucks and is now biting buyers in the behind (I got chewed some too).

Are the replacement ones much better?
I hope they are being £99 on the UK Apple site.

Try making an appointment with a Genius.

I did and they they ran a test said my battery was bad in my 15" MacBook Pro 2.33 and replaced it free of charge.

The MacBook was just over 18 months old and out of warranty. I even said so when they gave me the battery!

More of the same, meaning that it's a crapshoot and you'll only know in retrospect if it was good or not. I would seriously scout for a third party battery if they don't replace it free of charge. Problem was, when mine failed I was abroad on business and had no choice but to shell out.

"Service Battery" message? ohh boy, it's dead.

"the battery health is at 48%... does that mean it needs replacing?". yep!

i had the same problem too on my late '06 MBP it wouldn't hold the charge. Get the replacement battery, it's what i had to do. I bought an original apple battery and so far it's been great

ANy idea how many cycles you did?

Ive heard that once the battery has gone 300+ cycles they will charge you even if under 12months old or covered by Apple Care.
