Because part of it is reserved for the sealed OS.

Not a big deal really. I was just wondering why it says 994.66GB instead of the full 1TB. On my old laptop, it said 1TB. Anyone else had this?

As Apple_Robert said. Same thing happens on Windows PCs…

I wondered the same thing when I got my first AS Mac, it seems AS Macs have a 6GB APFS for the snapshot as best I could determine.
