Does anyone know if the new 15" MBP will take a 12.5mm hard drive or is there only room for a 9mm drive? (e.g. 500GB Samsung or Hitachi)

500gb will fit. They already have Macbooks with them in there on eBay. I hadn't seen a pro with one yet but I'm sure if it fits in the new 13" the 15" shouldn't be a problem. I think they only have 5400rpm versions of the drive but I've heard the 7200's are near release.

500GB will fit - no doubt about that. The question is whether the drive can be 9mm high or 12.5mm high. Samsung make a 9mm one, Hitachi make a 12.5mm one. I already have a Hitachi 500GB I can redeploy into the new MBP15, but I'll buy a Samsung if not. I was hoping someone might know already.

Sorry I didn't answer your question. Maybe you can send this guy a message and see which he used. If he used the Hitachi you will know it will fit.

Isn't the new MBP slightly thinner than the old one? If so, it's highly unlikely it would take anything larger than the 9.5mm drives used in the current models.

Cheers,

12mm didn't fit the OLD MBP, so I believe it's a safe bet that the new won won't as well, because it is thinner.

Not 100% sure but better to err on the side of caution until we find out for sure.

The old (current) 17" could fit a 12mm drive but the 15" could not. I suspect the new 15" probably doesn't either. Once the hardware test I'm running on my new one ends I can see what drive it has installed.

Well it doesn't prove it one way or another, but the drive in my stock 2.53GHz is a Hitachi travelstar 5k320 which is a 9.5mm high drive.

That could be. But the MBP17 could take a 12mm drive and I thought (but I am not sure about this) that the MBP17 was thinner than the MBP15 (previous models of course). I know the previous MBP15 could not take a 12mm drive though, but was it using other space that the MBP17 was not (because the 17 has a wider body).

Nope, the same 1" for the old MBP 17". ;)
