I've been saving $50/week since June '06 for the computer, and the monitor is a joint X-mas '06, '07, and Birthday '07 present from my parents.

I can't wait 'til mid-February when it comes! :D

Congrats, my buddy just ordered one too, he's upgrading from a Windtunnel also. :)

Anyone know why it doesn't support CD+R/+RW?

-------

because almost nothing else does these days. Well. not quite, but i think the '-R'/'-RW' is becoming the de-facto standard

congrats, asatostu.

I'm gearing up to plop down my hard earned cash as well (well, credit card at least)

What drives did/are you getting from newegg? WD Caviar SE16?

Actually, yes, those are the drives. $130 at NewEgg and they have the fastest write/seek times I've seen for the price. I'll be placing the order as soon as I actually place the order for the computer (faxed my proof-of-studentship to Apple about 2 hrs ago).

Yes you are wrong
Can you point me to some information on CD+R/+RW format then? (not DVD+R/+RW)

None of my drives support that format in any of my computers as far as I'm aware, and Google and Wikipedia (redirects to the CD-R page) are drawing a blank.

Forgot to say congrats, astrostu. That should be a very nice upgrade.

Question: Where did you see Bluetooth options? I'm not seeing it lumped with the AirPort extreme card this go around, nor do I see it anywhere mentioned as a 'built in'

EDIT: Oops...finally found it in 'complete specs'

I'm assuming it's built-in automatically because I didn't see it as a BTO option. The tech specs specifically state that it has it, while it lists the AirPort (and modem) as "Optional" and Bluetooth not: http://www.apple.com/macpro/specs.html

Thought I'd post a tiny update: It only took 22 hrs for Apple to confirm/update my ADC membership student status, so I just placed my order. Because of the graphics card, it has the delay that everyone's pointed out, so it'll be here "by" Feb. 20 ... in time for the eclipse on Feb. 22 when I'll have hundreds of photos to process in PhotoShop ... 16-bit 8 Mpx images took about 15 minutes to do in my workflow before (since I stack and align and average them along with other stuff) on my PowerBook ... hoping to cut down the spinning lollipop of doom time!

may i ask what the discount was with ADC membership - i'm wondering whther it's worth signing up?

Wow you did pretty well keeping it upgraded, I imagine even today the G4 isn't a bad machine (better than my 4 year old G4 Powerbook!)

Kudos for saving up, rather than adding to the debt crisis that plagues both the UK and allegedly the USA :)

20%. If you're a student, it's a once-a-lifetime discount for the $100 membership, making it worth more than the student discount if you buy a system for more than $1000. But it has to be used for development (which I do on the side and as part of my research).

It's literally hanging together by tape at the moment, and it's propped open because I had to replace a hard drive but can't get the old one out since the screws are striped. The fan in the PSU is fried so I have an external one taped on the outside to suck the air out to keep it from thermally shutting down.

But yeah, my goal is to never go into debt until I buy a house. ;)
