A couple jailbreak questions to those who know

I want to JB my iPhone 3GS running 4.0.2 is it still possible? The one main reason I want it is to get custom SMS tones. Where would I go to get the JB? I read there were some security issues with jailbreakme, is this true? What security issues if any, and how would I avoid them? Thank you to anyone that helps me out
