There are so few good cases out for the 15 MBA... I'm not talking about sleeves... I want a good rugged case. Anybody found any yet?

I tried a few of the amazon ones out right now, most and if not all are from China and they are pretty crappy but does the job.
Nothing rugged out there, I just give it a few months before companies start making cases, the MBA 15 is too popular for them to not make any.
For now, since I have the midnight, I’m using a matte skin from slickwraps to deal with the fingerprints.

Took a few weeks to get, but I purchased one from Woolnut.com. Very nice sleeve.

I have ordered a Tomtoc 360 sleeve for my MBA 15 (that is due to arrive this week - the MBA that is, and the sleeve!)

I had a smaller version of this sleeve for my iPP 12.9 with MKB and have just given it to my partner for her new MBA 13 M1 and it fits like a glove!

Excellent case, highly recommend!

I'm using an eva case from Amazon (FINPAC, the 15-16" model).
I was specifically looking for something that would prevent crush damage when I'm traveling with a bunch of stuff in my bag. No complaints yet.

I also tried the 13.5-14" model but it was too tight of a fit and made it a pain to get in and out.

I haven't used Slickwraps before. I'm assuming since it's a skin there's no physical protection from drops or dings, right? It just gives it a good look and deals with the fingerprints. Is that correct?

Yes. Slickwraps / Dbrands / etc are just skins stuck to your machine that product it from fingerprints & scratches. They offer no actual physical protection should you drop your machine or bang it into something.

The lack of cases early on has been a recurring thing. It happened with the 16 inch MBP where it took months for a good case to come out by the bigger companies. Early on we had to settle for the cheap brittle plastic ones that Amazon had to offer, that were worse fingerprint magnets than a midnight MBA and had corners that cracked easily.

I imagine like with the 16 inch MBP, patience, caution, and a sleeve are the best options for a few months.

That is correct, the skins just helps with fingerprints and scratches, wont protect you from any physical drops or anything like that. Honestly a case is not needed if your laptop is at home most of the time and sitting on your desk.
And when you are outside your house, you use a sleeve or your bag should protect the machine.

I remember when the M1 Air came out it took about three months for the plastic shells to come out that fit. I think you are looking at a similar wait unless one of Apple's preferred vendors had an early sample and decided to make something.

I have the Magnetic Laptop Sleeve from Waterfield for my MacBook Airs. Not exactly a case, but more of a sleeve that you can carry alone, or over your shoulder via optional strap.

For my 15" Air I got the Black Waxed Canvas:

For my 13" Air I got the Green Waxed Canvas:

I opted for the Supreme Strap and D-Rings for both. Excellent, well made, closes and opens smoothly and magnetically, and the side pocket holds an iPhone, slim charger, cable and AirPods.

I am not really a snap-on case person for MacBooks, but I have been eyeing some genuine leather 'wraps', from Toast and others.

I have Incase hard shell cases for my 14” MacBook Pro and 13” M1 MacBook Air, no word for the 15” model.

I just ordered one of these. Looks really cool. For $30 or so, a great deal too.

Harber of London have updated their range for the 15" Air. They do some very nice leather sleeves which are pretty reasonably priced too.
