A decent program for animated gifs needed

Can anyone recommend a good universal program for making animated gifs with? I used to use imageready, but it was always to cumbersome for me, and too slow on my macbook.

What would be great is a program like Animation Shop for windows, which I still find one of the best animated gif programs I've used.

Any ideas?
