A different install problems with SL

I hope someone has some idea of what to do here! My SL installation starts ok, but the computer shuts down mid installation, usually at the 16 minute mark. The computer itself does NOT detect the HD, but the SL installer does. Through the installer I have been able to verify the disk, nothing wrong there. However, I can't access my system!

I am installing on a macbook pro CD 1.83 using the original (I believe) 80 GB drive. It is GUID. I have also tried resetting the pram. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Well, I was not able to install SL the usual route so I started up the laptop in target disk mode, connected it to my imac (with the SL disk in the drive) via firewire, and managed to install SL from my imac. It took forever, but it did work. I have no idea what could be causing this problem...
