I was cleaning my room the other day and found a Maximum Pc Mag from April 2007. It had some benchmark comparison for a few items alot of us have been talking about. So I decided to post these result. I know its from April 2007 but still seemed very interesting.
(1) HD comparison Raptor 150 GB 10k RPM vs Segate 750 GB 7.2k RPM.
Does the Barracuda's increased areal density match the Raptor's increased speed?
Raptor vs Barracuda
Random Access (MS) 8.3 / 13.4
Average Read (MB/s) 77.9 / 66
Burst Speed (MB/s) 98.8 / 236.9
Avg read is more important than Burst speed. They declared the raptor the winner.
(2) Windows Vista vs XP for gaming (if you want to install it on your Mac). These tests were run on a PC but i'm guessing it would carry over to your Mac.
XP Pro vs Vista
Fear FPS 61 / 56
Company of Heroes 69.4 / 60.1
Quake 4 84.4 / 74.3
XP Pro did a little bit better. Not a huge difference but difference none the less.
(3) ESATA vs Firewire 800
ESATA vs Firewire 800
Random Access (MS) 8.3 / 8.1
AVG Read (MB/s) 77.9 / 76.0
Burst Speed (MB/s) 128.8 / 87.9
Just about even. Incase your thinking of using an external HD.
Again , these results are from the April 2007 MaxPC Mag. I don't know how helpful these results might be to you, but I figured i'd share them since most of you probably don't get PC mags.
