I'm fairly clueless about television technology. I know that the new Apple TV supports HDMI 2.1 but not 120hz refresh rates. So, if I connect an Apple TV to a television that supports a 120hz refresh rate will the TV still display video at 120hz if the video is streaming from the Apple TV? Can someone explain why or why not?

Also, is it possible the Apple TV will get a software update to support 120hz in the future?

Thanks,

Skylamar

No it’ll display the video at either whatever you’ve set the Apple TV video settings to ie: 50Hz or 60Hz.
Or whatever the the particular video content requires if you have Match Frame turned on ie: 25Hz, 30Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, 24Hz

Currently there’s literally zero streaming content available in 120Hz so I guess would be pretty pointless, possible for gaming but even then currently there’s no games via Apple Arcade that would even warrant it.

Thanks. That's helpful. I asked the question because I'm thinking of getting an LG C2 48" television which supports 120Hz. But two weeks ago I went to Best Buy because they were selling an LG A2 48" for half off for Black Friday. It's an OLED television but only supports 60hz. Unfortunately Best Buy didn't have it on display, but I asked one of the sales guys what he thought of the A2 versus the C2. I also told him I'm not a gamer. He was quite critical of the A2, largely because of its refresh rate, and convinced me that the C2 was worth getting. Maybe I would have still chosen the A2 if it had been on display, but I did see the C2 and the picture quality was great. So I've been planning to get one but it's also disappointing to hear that no video content right now supports 120hz.

Since the Apple TV supports HDMI 2.1 is it possible it will be able to support 120hz eventually with a software update?

For what purpose though, it’s only gaming that even that can even make use of it.

This article should explain things
