Hi everyone! I'm posting this on behalf of my girlfriend, whose PC has begun its sad decline into non-working condition. Anyways, she's looking to buy a new notebook, and I convinced her to get a mac, since they're sturdy and won't break on her right away like her PC did . She's on a very tight budget, but only uses her current computer for word processing and web browsing really. I suggested she maybe buy an iBook G4, or a first gen Macbook? Knowing that her budget is around 600-700 max, what do you guys think? Any links or advice help as always ;).

Maybe an Ibook G4+new battery (if the one fitted isn't any good) and it will go good..
I bought my G3 for +- the same porpose that your girlfriend want, and it does the job..but a little slow..so a g4 will be fine..

Be a gentlemen and throw in a couple hundred so she could get a new Macbook? Or at least an Apple Refurbished one. Would be the most reasonable solution as powerPC is outdated.

Yeah we were also thinking waiting until fall, and buying a refurbished white book, if her PC can hold out until then. I don't have enough money to be a gentleman unfortunately :(, though I have offered to pay for repairs and new batteries if she buys a used computer. I guess we'll buy whatever we can when her computer crashes.

I agree with Aea. Since she's leaving windows, I wouldn't recommend an old machine since that might really sour the experience for her. MacMall has some pretty good deals.

For $700 you could get probably a second gen MacBook.

I think if you can,a macbook could be a smart choice, newer tech, can run newer apps, etc etc
But if by the time you can't afford one,a good 12' ibook or powerbook G4 like the one you linked would do the job well too.
Sometimes people doesn't need the latest tech avaible, just one that suit his needs..

Nice deal... I would go with this option and $42 for 2x 2GB sticks of RAM from dealram.com and $~65 for a 320GB hard drive from new egg.

Your lady friend will love it and it will be right on budget.
