A KP resulting in 2 failed (S.M.A.R.T.) drives...?

My Mac Pro KP'ed yesterday around noon and when I brought the system back up it took 45 mins to boot...

Now two of the six physical disks on the box are reporting fatal hardware errors (S.M.A.R.T.). Can this actually be?
