A little help with JB and unlock 3GS v4.2.1

I'm selling my fiances 3GS with 4.2.1, never been JB'd.

The guys wants it with the stipulation that i JB and unlock for him.

I've done it a bunch of times for people. But what i wanna know is should i just leave the 4.2.1 on it, or upgrade it to a newer version, and then JB and unlock?
If so, what version should i upgrade it to?

And the best tool for unlocking would be what?

If your phone has never been jailbroken previously meaning that the baseband on your phone is now 05.14.04 which can't be unlocked by Ultrasn0w. However, there is way for you to upgrade it to an Ipad baseband 06.15. By doing so, you will kill GPS function on your phone.

For jailbreak your phone, just run Greenpois0n and you will get an untethered jailbreak.

Personally, I will not upgrade to 4.3.5 because there is no untethered jailbreak available for this firmware yet. It is currently tethered.

If your Iphone has 4.0 firmware on it, then yes you can unlock it because it has 05.13 baseband. For 3G/3GS, any baseband is higher than 05.13 can't be locked by Ultrasn0w. Since your Iphone has upgraded pass this 4.0, your phone now has the higher baseband and currently, the only way to unlock it is to put the Ipad baseband on it.

He has the 3GS, so the only option for now is Ipad baseband. I don't think Gevey option works for 3GS.

i meant that i've unlocked and JB'd for people many times in the past, in case someone thought i needed basic instructions.
