A mouse challenge...

ok, so I have the microsoft intellimouse explorer for bluetooth. A 5 button mouse.
I just discovered expose can see the extra buttons, this means they WORK in 10.3 without a special microsoft driver.
The challenge is this... Help me figure out how to get those buttons to move me forward and back in almost any web browser. (ie. I would accept safari. mozilla, phoenix or IE, but probably not opera or a few others.

You need to install Microsoft driver to get it working in browers. What I've found is that with this pre-Panther driver, I can't set the scroll wheel to scroll one page at a time. Now it is just a few lines

I really shouldn't post because I don't have an answer to help your current situation but my only advice would be to look at the logitech mx500 or mx700 wireless. Plenty of buttons with drivers for mac. When I bought my powerbook logitech had just come out with the mx 500 and I love it. Here's a link.

I got this gorgeous mouse for $40 by pure luck, not returning it...

Erf. This seems reeeeeeeeeeally basic for most people, but I'ma throw this out there... did you try USB Overdrive, the absolute best way to get those extra mouse buttons working? Obviously it's good that the OS reports the extra buttons - USB Overdrive should have no problem letting you set them up.

It will work. Set the 4th and 5th buttons as a key stroke. For Safari, Command-[ for back one page and Command-] for forward one page. Just keep adding apps for each of your browsers, then figure out the key combo for that app and put it in as a keystroke for that button. Done.

usboverdrive only works with USB mice. I tried it, it does not detect my mouse.

I just got my 17" PB with Panther and will the Microsoft Bluetooth mouse ($79) work? I don't need to plug anything into the PB since Bluetooth is already in the PB, right?

The intellimouse driver from microsoft should work for any of their mice.

While I haven't used it with Panther, it allowed me to make my side
buttons act as forward and back in Safari, Camino, and Finder.

Each intellimouse driver is unique to each mouse, or at least it has to detect a supported microsoft mouse. The Bluetooth mouse is unsupported.
