okay, at work... we run 22 Windows XP Professional systems... all LAN and working. Now, I am able to connect my OSX to the switch to use the internet, but what I have not figure out is... how can I access the networking printer and the file server for ally my old files?

The network is running a workgroug and I can ping each of one of the stations... but I cannot access the workgroup... anyone with some advice?

What kind of network?

If its an MS domain with print queues, or a Netware setup with NDPS or print queues it'll be different. The easiest thing to do is walk up to the printer, print a test page, get the IP address, opening up Print Center on your Mac, and setup the printer as an IP printer.

As for the file system, try connecting to it with the Connect to Server (Command-K in Finder) and browse for it, if it doesn't show up, try typing in the address field:

smb://<ip address>

example:

smb://192.168.0.1

This would also work with the name of the machine.
