Could this be an opportunity to have a nice box to put Windows Media Center on?
It seems Apple don't want to give it's customers the digital hub that they really are looking for, avoiding the most prolific digital medium, TV. Instead, they're positioning themselves to give us what they want, a revenue stream in the form of a costly download service. This is OK for the odd special program you may want to purchase, but not good for your main immediate viewing needs. Problem is I don't want to duplicate hardware. I don't want a TV with recording features separate to my Mac, because it means... For the first time in my life, I'm thinking of Windows Vista Media Centre to provide my digital hub, because that is now looking like the best option for TV!
Remember, anything new will have some kudos... and Vista will.
Apple seems to be missing the point that for the next few years we will still be getting TV in other ways, not only downloading it. And we will still want to record some of the programs we watch. I want an integrated, scalable and future proof system and now the only choice is on Windows. When Apple can provide the whole of the worlds TV output for download then we will no longer have need for a DVR, but till then they are machine gunning themselves in the foot. As quickly as the halo effect brings new customers to Apple, they will be hemorrhaging others to a more complete entertainment hub in Vista.
Doh!
There is of course a conflict of interests. Content providers will not look so favorably on a platform that aids recording of their output, but if Microsoft can do it... Apple..? Why not think what so many customers want and be seen to deliver that? If you want allegiance you could try playing the good guy and win out that way too..?
For me it's a no brainer... and with that... the day Apple starts to sell flat panel TV's will herald the doubling of their revenue and their stock price.
What do you think? Do we want TV? A profile for a new CRT Mac?
Will there be an Intel-based CRT Mac? Apple appears to be working on a successor to the eMac, a low-cost all-in-one computer with a 19-inch 16:10 widescreen CRT display at a maximum resolution of 1680x1050 pixels at 100Hz refresh rate. The system would use an ultra-low cost Intel Celeron-class processor with DDR-400 memory on a 400MHz System Bus...
