Hi,

earlier this year I got hold of a new Canon G11. The part of the world I live in does not always have access to the latest models hence I got a G11 not a G12.

Anyway, I really like it in that I can take photos in Manual mode and shot in RAW and really try and work out how to take some nice photos in different circumstances. I've also posted a few pictures in the appropriate treads here and have appreciated the constructive criticism - thanks.

However, I will be in the US (well Texas at least :D) for the month of August and I have this idea floating around about trying to sell my G11 and get a DSLR. Hopefully without spending too much more then what I could get for my old camera. Basically I'm thinking a entry level type like a Nikon D40x, D60 second hand with or without kit lens but add a 50mm prime (not to worried about having to manual focus, but tell if I should be!). It seems I could do that in the region of $4-500USD - or am I dreaming. A quick look at ebay and it seems I should be able to get $300 or so for the G11 with box and all the original contents.

As I've been taking photos and looking at the typical situations I shot and also at the type of photos I would like to take it seems a 50mm prime lens would be on my camera most of the time if I had a DSLR. (indoors in low light, portraits a bit of street photography.) A big zoom lens I don't think I would use much - but of course could add later.

So is it a horrible idea to buy a second hand body from craigslist or ebay? Would secondhand from a place like Adorama be better? Does anyone have any experience of second hand camera stores in the Houston area? Lastly how do you guys (in the US) sell your secondhand camera stuff? Are local shops going to give me a reasonable price for a G11 say if at the same time I picked up a DSLR from them too, or is it best to sell it first say on craigslist and go in with cash.

Sorry if these all seem stupid questions but having not lived in the US it's hard from a distance to get a feel for the best way of doing things so I would be grateful for some advice from those 'stateside'.

Cheers
Joel
