With FileVault turned on before, if power was lost to a machine or it had a panic reboot or what not, you would have to access it from the console in order to recover. I have a mac at a vacation home thousands of miles away and had to buy an IPKVM in order to be able to remotely handle this situation.
We had a power outage there last night and I ssh'd in just to see if the system was carried over by its UPS. What I got was an SSH key mismatch and then a message that said (paraphrasing here because I didn't capture it) "this system is locked. Authenticate as any user to unlock." It then prompted me for my password, then said "System is now unlocked and ssh will work normally" and it disconnected. I ssh'd in again and the system was operating normally. When I next screen-shared I had to give it my password (as opposed to being able to use touch-ID or my watch, neither of which were going to work remotely anyhow), and then it did the full login.
This is a major, major improvement and has made me very happy indeed.
