Well...several hours of fruitless attempts and I'm hoping someone here can tell me where i'm going wrong.

I've an old iMac with GPU failure and all the Mac will do is boot into single user mode. I can boot from the HD or CD, thats not a problem but i'm trying to format the drive before selling the system on. I've little knowledge of terminal commands but learn fast. The HD is fully functioning and full of data which needs to go.

I know I cant format or secureErase a live, booted drive, so i'm booting from the install CD. So far so good. But I cant run DiskUtil to see the details of the internal HD - comments and errors appear which don't let me do what I think i ought to. (something about Frameworks, etc...can't remember)

So...from single user boot from CD, How would I wipe the internal HD?

Help!!

I think the system volume is not actually mounted in single-user mode. That's why you can run fsck.
So you may well be able to run diskutil from there.
