A queston about Unsupported Macs and the OS

I am using a mid-2009 15" MacBook Pro (info below) witha SSD, and I was wondering if there is really any advantage to running anything later than El Capitan (the last supported OS). Are there any real advantages other than updated software etc.? Such as speed or performance improvements.

Any insight, help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
