The Apple Watch is an interesting product. I've owned the iPhone ever since the first 3G capable model was introduced, gen 2. I appreciate Apple products based upon great industrial designs, and in my opinion, the best integration of the software elements and user experience.
The Apple Watch is a wonderful design but I think what it actually does in many ways is flawed. I'm not really going to look at pictures on my watch when I have an iPhone 6 that has to accompany me everywhere for the watch to function. And there are many more examples of this nonsense that we saw during the product launch. I was hoping for much more of a health focus but from the sounds of it the development testing didn't yield good enough results to include many of the sensors they wanted to focus on. The Apple Watch feels a lot like buying a remote control for your remote control. What does it do that my phone can't?
However, I'll be buying the Apple Watch, and here's why... Think about your most used applications on your iPhone. Are they the preloaded Apple applications, or are they largely 3rd party apps. For me, it's 3rd party apps hands-down.
I've been wanting to buy an activity band like fitbit or Polar but none of them really impress me. Also, I've wanted to get a new watch. The Apple Watch will give me a new watch, a health tracker, notifications on my wrist (the best selling point in my opinion), and ultimately some really great 3rd party apps that will work with my car, my garage door opener, maybe the range finder app on my iphone to show me distances at the golf course, etc. The imagination of the developers will make this a great product.
I'm judging this device based upon the hardware design and the new platform that it creates that will, eventually, offer many benefits. First generation products always evolve into something much better. I think Apple is off to a great start with this design but there is still more work to do after they understand how consumers will use and value the product.
