Hey there, fellow Mac-enthusiasts!

I’ve got the 14”/32c but I’ve really been considering swapping it for a 24c version.

I haven’t been able to find anyone who can run a test for me to see if the 24c version of the GPU on the 14” can maintain full clock speeds longer than 10-20s (full clock is ~1300Mhz). My 14”/32c will spike to full clock speeds for about 10s when I start a GPU-intensive task, but then drops as low as 600Mhz and usually stabilizes around 1100Mhz.

I tested a 16” for a week but it was way too big after using the M1 MBA for the last year. However, the 16” could easily maintain full clock speeds for hours — without even ramping up the fans.

If the 14/24c can do the same thing, I totally want to swap from my 14”/32c (rather than deal with the throttling).

If you use https://github.com/tlkh/asitop you can monitor all the power metrics; from here you’d be able to see easily if GPU can maintain full clock speeds.

I made of a video of my 14”/32c here so you can see what I am talking about:

I know this is an ask and I don’t know how to repay the favor via the Internet but I’m happy to do any tests that someone needs on the 14”/32c. ?

It might be useful to see if the 14" 24-core will match the 14" 32-core performance in the same benchmark. Fewer cores running at a faster speed may not perform as well.

You can compare to some results from this video using the 14" 24-core. (The 32-core results in the video are from a 16".)

I didn't install those python scripts but looking at 'powermetrics --samplers gpu_power' shows that my 14"/24c settles around 1050 mhz and 22W. Mine only hit 28W for a second.

Huh, now mine is running at a consistent ~1240 Mhz @ ~22.3W. Probably best not to obsess over instantaneous clock speeds on an SoC engineered for power efficiency.

I just ran across this post and video from Reddit. It appears to be the OP's exact test and metrics. The 24 core does well in comparison to the the 32 core.
The Reddit tester is using a slightly higher resolution (1920x1200). Don't know how that's handled for processing when the difference is only in one dimension and changes the aspect ratio. He gets generally worse frame rates than the 32-core as tested above (@1920x1080), but sometimes very close.

here you have another to look at for comparisons in gaming

The machines were designed to be in two configs which are:

14 Pro 10/16 32gb
16 Max 10/32 64gb

I made a new video w/ the same settings SeaRefractor using the 14"/32c:

32c ends up with less FPS on the counter. ;P

About a month ago I made a couple of Reddit posts with my thoughts about the 14 and 16" M1 Max here, if you're interested. My findings held up with all the new information available:

Interesting results! Similar frame rates to the 24-core (maybe a bit higher at least for the parts I watched, but hard to tell), with what seems to be slightly lower package power. Wonder why there would be lower package power.

What reviewers are saying, only go for the M1 Max 32-GPU if you go for the 16” model.

For the 14” model, the 24-Core version is the sweet spot.

But the 14” 32-core is faster than the 24-core version. However not by the amount that you would expect

If money is not an issue, I’d say stick with the 14” 32-core version as it is the fastest version of the 14” model.

I have the 14-inch M1 Max with the 24 core GPU and base 512 SSD and am very happy with the performance. It was the perfect configuration for me as I wanted more GPU power but didn’t need any more storage or the minor bump the 32 core GPU would bring. Plus I wanted the smaller size. It’s been awesome so far and is doing everything I ask of it. I have hundreds of games on various stores but minimal time to test anything. Right now I’m finishing A Plague Tale: Innocence in Crossover and it’s running awesome in 2k and high settings.
