I just bought a Tom Bihn Smart Alec backpack and a Brain Cell laptop sleeve for my 15" MacBook pro after hearing some recommendations here.
Great suggestion and great bag. The Smart Alec doesn't have as many bells and whistles as my old Targus bag, but it's truly apple-like in its simplicity and attention to detail, and its modest size keeps me from packing too much. The Brain Cell literally fits like a glove.
The Smart Alec is evidently being updated, but I can't imagine what you'd change on it. It wasn't cheap, but cheap is as cheap does. The kiwi color is much cooler and more subtle than the limey neongreen on the web page.
One mod I made: I velcroed a piece of closed cell foam to the bottom of the brain cell for a little additional protection.
