So my uncle just went to the Apple Store to get a brand new 32GB iPhone 3GS. We went home happily, got to the garden to unbox the iPhone. Just as my uncle opened the box and held the iPhone in his hand, my little cousin ran into his leg, making him drop the 3GS onto the cold hard concrete. This is what is has become.

How should he go about repairing it?

If it is just the glass then I believe Apple will replace it for $199. You can check into that or go online for 3GS replacements and DIY.

This story is tough to believe... If it was a new phone, why is the bezel scratched up everywhere, not just in one spot?

he said he wanted to sand the sides since he had already dropped it and scratched the bezel and that he would send it to applecare and let them change the glass. The screen is till functionable surprisingly..

well , 4 months ago, i dropped my black 16GB 3G 2 storey down and it hit a drain. Smashed real bad but screen was still usable. Repaired in 4 days by Applecare. :) Here's the pic. Compare the damage to my uncle's 3GS.

But wait, you just said he only just took it out of the box when the kid ran into him?

He dropped it twice?

Glad he's ponying up to pay for his clumsiness instead of expecting Apple to foot the bill - lots of people around here would try and blame it on Apple. Nice to see someone with a sense of responsibility.

Sorry, don't believe you. The base of the phone in that pic is clearly crushed in - looks more like it was run over by a car. Also, "screen was still usable"? Yeah, right. Finally, the image is ripped from here:

Taking others' work for yet another of your attention-seeking posts. Nice. I think we can pretty much ignore all of your posts from now on, can't we?

[Edit] looks like your first post picture is taken from the hackintosh forums, posted in January. I think that makes your thread completely fabricated, doesn't it?

sounds to me

like you both need otterboxes I mean seriously. I think your cousin needs to go back to the apple store hope for the best but expect a $199 charge, I don't think anybody is selling the replacement screens yet. Also I don't think I would open a breakable item on a hard surface! if I can avoid it! ;)

The iPhone are actually really tough, as seen here in stress tests from a reputable source.

Is your family's last name "Butterfingers" or "Murphy" ??

Actually it's imaginary.

First picture: "brand new", but the bezel is scratched up, as noticed by patrickdunn.
The photo from stolen from another forum.

Second picture: "happened 4 months ago", but the photo is stolen from another site from summer 2008

Move along. Nothing to see here.
