I have a small theory on the faulty screens:

Apple will never officially acknowledge the fault and issue a recall.

However,

They will exchange them no questions asked to people who request.

That way the people who would never notice or don't care won't be rushing to the store and exchanging while the people who are bothered (and educated on the issue) won't be upset.
 
Well, based on my experience today... they will NOT exchange them no questions asked. It seems like they have been instructed to pretend there is not an issue at all... to the point that they will try to convince you at the store that nothing is wrong.

Yep. That and they will insinuate that you are just too picky.
