App developer Matt Wiechec yesterday launched the new game A Tiny Game of Pong [Direct Link], which lets users engage in the classic 1970's video game of Pong using the Apple Watch's Digital Crown to control their paddle. The free app version comes with an endless arcade mode that pits you against the high scores of your friends, Game Center integration, and allows for standalone play when the Apple Watch is not paired with an iPhone.

For an in-app purchase of $0.99, users can add a second mode called classic playoff, which lets players go head-to-head against an AI in a match that lasts until someone gets three points. That upgrade also allows for a color customization of the game playing field, with themes matching the hues of Apple's own line of Apple Watch sport bands.
FEATURES

[*]Responsive Analog Controls - turn the Digital Crown to move your paddle.

[*]Two Unique Game Modes - endless Arcade and Classic playoff mode.

[*]Compete with friends for high scores with Game Center integration on Apple Watch.

[*]Personalize your game to your Apple Watch band style with ten theme colors.

[*]Plays standalone without iPhone.

[*]FREE for a limited time!
It should be noted that A Tiny Game of Pong is not the first Pong-like game to be released on Apple's wearable device, but the simple and polished app feels like one of the first notable experiences to show up on the barren Apple Watch game marketplace in a while. Games like pong for Apple Watch [Direct Link] and Pong Watch [Direct Link] launched on the App Store last year.

Those interested can download A Tiny Game of Pong on the App Store for free today. [Direct Link]

Why is the game rotated 90°? The original Pong game -- and the Digital Crown -- are orientated vertically. Other than that, it looks like a very cool Watch app.

The screen isn't wide enough you wouldn't be able to react in time.

Killer App right here.

EDIT: A thought, although I'm sure Pong clones have some leeway, actually calling it "A tiny game of Pong" is sure to bring legal action from Atari.

Perhaps he's just banking on the publicity to bring in some money before he is forced to change the name.

This is what sucks about Apple Watch:

1. Download app
2. Open iPhone app to look at options
3. Find Watch app
4. Find/tap on app name in list
5. Tap Install and wait (~10 seconds)
6. Hit crown on apple watch
7. Find app icon
8. Launch app and wait for load (~5 seconds)

Those are the steps I had to take just to play this game. My question, why can't Apple allow developers to have a button that pops up a dialog asking if you want to install the watch app, from inside the container app? This seems so incredibly obvious, yet it is completely missing. Yes, there is auto-install...but I don't want every phone app on my watch.

So, I tried it. I know it's on an Apple Watch, but needs some changes. #1 agree with orientation comment. Why is it not side to side instead of up and down. #2 the trajectory is very hard to gauge do to no defined walls. The ball just bounces off of black space.

Finally, a good time waster on my watch!

Runs well and one of the first (if the first) app I actually enjoy on my watch that's not default.

Now we know the real reason why Apple went with a square face for its watch. Think of how hard it would be to play all these epic Pong games if the face were round. :D

Hm, after I downloaded the game from the App Store on my iMac and forgot about it for a few minutes, Automatic App Install had it ready to go for me on my Apple Watch. Do you think you have that turned off? It's in Apple Watch App>General>App Install.

Obviously doesn't make the app load any faster on the Watch, but makes installing them essentially painless.

I agree. I was looking for watch apps and games but couldn't find any i really liked. This is actually pretty fun and works well. I dont know about you all, but it actual loads pretty fast on my watch.

The watch isnt wide enough to do the game vertically- also, once you play for a while you'll get the hang of the walls. I personally like how they didnt take up room putting in a line to define the walls
