This may sound like nonsense, even to those who know what Sky+ is (a PVR/satellite dual tuner).

I was wondering what the likelyhood of someone making something to plug into its digital interface so that it can communcate with computers over a network (obviously airport would be coolest). My limited understanding suggests that this could allow for:

- transfer of the MPEG2 files to a laptop for watching later on

- transfer of the MPEG2 files to any computer with a DVD burner

- streaming of programmes for viewing on a networked computer (I don't know if the bandwidth woulod support this...)

- A web interface for programming the PVR with some sort of personalised "suggestion list".

Regarding my last point, perhaps this is where Sky could exploit the Tivo effort. At the moment there is no way of personalising your viewing choice. There's just too much on and I'm always missing stuff. Especially as Sky+ can now record two programmes at once, even while playing back another, I rarely watch live TV. As a result, I rarely know what's on either. Some sort of "Gates-esque personal agent" to suggest content over the web would be perfect, as I don't think Sky will ever build this into their hardware.

I'm guessing there must be similar hardware on the other side of the pond. Any sign of this sort of convergence?
