Is there a way of making the grey options bar disappear (the one on top of the screen), just like the bar does on a PC?

The menubar can be set as transparent, but it cannot hide. There was a haxie called menufela for Tiger (10.4) that made it hide, but on Leopard its a no-go.
 
Oh this is iPhone section? Well then what I said won't apply since one of these things is not like the other.

It should probably be filed away in your "better get used to it" section. The toolbar is an integral piece of just about every application.
