a way to convert .avi to work with imovie

so I have two huge .avi files that need to be converter to some format to play/load into imovie so I can edit them:

a) what should I convert to?

b) what should I USE to convert it to that format?

With the DivX QuickTime codec installed, iMovie will accept [DivX-encoded] avi files without conversion.

You could check out iSquint. How great does the quality need to be?

yeah, i used isquint but the quality needs to be for a tv

I think iSquint has a TV setting. Don't know how it would translate as I only convert movies for my iPod. If you've tried it, how has it turned out?
