This isn't a thread were I'm asking for help to solve any specific problem, it's more a question out of nostalgia and curiosity.
Back in the System 7 days, I had this application by AWOL Utilities called "Virtual Desktop". It did a very simple thing: Added scroll bars to your screen. In that way, I could increase my resolution from say 640*480 to 1024*768 at the cost of precious system memory (but RamDoubler solved that). I no longer have a computer that can start up into System 7, so I can't give you a screenshot. Here's what the application icon looks like:
Here's my question: Although there are multiple virtual desktop solutions available for the Mac, none of the ones I've tried actually give you a larger desktop. Rather, they're window managers that solve the clutter on your screen. Is there any way I can make a window expand past the limits of my desktop resolution?
For Windows, I've found an old application called WinSpace that creates a virtual desktop grid, but where you can have objects overlap between spaces. If such a feature were available for Mac, that would be a possible answer to my question.
Alternative solutions that I already know of: 1) Connecting a second monitor to my Mac Pro, or adding graphics cards for even more high resolution fun. 2) SwitchResX, but that seems to be restricted to the physical limits of your monitor. 3) Using ScreenRecycler to achieve the same effects as in 1. I've also heard rumors that I could use the VNC on localhost and thus increase the desktop size, but those rumors are unconfirmed.
