A way to preview new SMS messages?

I was just wondering if there was a way to preview new SMS msgs, from the main screen, without actually opening them.

I was able to do this with my old phone/carrier and sometimes it was convenient for me to not have to open the message and respond when all it said was "give me a call" or "we're at ___"
