I am buying an extra power cord for my new Macbook pro. The power cord that came with it is an A1290.

Would an A1172 or A1222 work, or must I stick with an A1290?

thanks

All apple magsafe adapters can safely be used on different machines, however in order for the battery to charge and full performance on the machine, you need to make sure the wattage is the same.

So it sounds like your computer is 85W, so any 85W magsafe is appropriate, though I don't recommend the A1172 if you're going to use it for travel, it's too big to stay in an outlet with the small 2 prong adapter, so you really need to use the longer cable for it.
