Hi all and thanks for letting me join this wonderful forum which over the years have served me well even though never joined.

I have a Macbook Pro A1229 2009 which is causing me concerns with a black screen at startup, i have read loads of forum notes on this subject but although it seemed that some things worked i soon realized it seems completely random.

The problem is i start it up and and everything is normal and all diagnostics pass every thing without problems and no problems with anything, then over the last few months its got worse and worse and now starts 1 in 100 power ons.

I have tried resetting the SMC and and Pram and battery out with long press of power without it working every time, sometimes it seems to work but now i think its just a graphics problem but it chimes every time and seems to be running behind the screen and sleeps when i leave it.

Now about a year ago it stopped charging so i purchased a new battery and still did not work , changed the charger and still the same problem. so i could not use it. A few months ago i thought i would have another go at it, and it charged instantly and started working again !!! i did nothing, the reason i mentioned this is my charger cable mag connector gets quite hot, on closer inspection the two outer earth pins are getting burnt and they no longer sprung loaded. But having said that it all works and charges the battery which says to me the SMC had probably reset itself with a flat battery for a few months.

I have read a few threads about cooking the GPU by unplugging the fans for a few hours to try and get the GPU to work again but sounds like a disaster to me but possibly as a last resort? But a part of me is thinking it could be a power issue?
Or a short somewhere?
The fans seem to run up high when it runs ok but they also run down after a while.

I also have a hot air gun for rework where you can set a temperature and flow and was thinking with a little flux reflowing the joints but have never done this before so not sure of best temperatures.

Basically i don't want to buy a new charger, motherboard etc ect its just not worth the outlay. and i will sell as spares, however i would welcome comments from anyone who has any advice or had similar issues.

Many thanks in advance.
