Bluetooth software hasn't been updated to do A2DP, but the very smooth (and impossible to derail from Apple Messaging) Greg Joswiak didn't say the hardware wasn't improved. I asked if audio streaming was coming, and he looked hesitant to answer. (I'll take that as a yes.) Before he could answer, I spoke for him. "We don't comment on future product announcements.
"

Is this possible? That the hardware is capable of A2DP but it is just restricted via firmware?

All Bluetooth 2.0 hardware is capable of A2DP (its part of the specification). This means that all Apple needs to do is put the support into the OS and we're good to go...

Yup, streaming stereo Bluetooth is just a simple software issue. If we don't have it by now, we're not going to get it.

Why not? Who knows.
