People are asking same question over and over again, why after installing 10.15 (Catalina) there are two volumes when I open disk utility.
The answer is simple: Apple has introduced new way of organizing system files, everything belonging to OS is moved to read only volume. Everything else not belonging to system is kept on another R/W volume.
I do not know if this shall be pinned or not. I hope people will read this and get answer without needing to open a thread.

About the read-only system volume in macOS Catalina or later - Apple Support (IN)
macOS Catalina or later runs in a read-only system volume, separate from other files on your Mac. When you upgrade to macOS Catalina or later, a second volume is created, and some files may move to a Relocated Items folder.
