Can I Simply install this application and then let it be and it will continue it's service without me doing anything? (Other than if I want to do a manual scan.)

That's one of the things I also didn't really get with ClamAV. The interface is horrible and I found it very slow. So I downloaded Norton AV 10 ($49). Very nice interface, updates at least once a week, background checks and up to now no performance breakdown or other problems.
