? about cutting bits in Garageband

I read somewhere that when you cut pieces of a track in the garageband editor, garageband inserts a blank space with no sound, thereby preserving the timing of your recording. Is this true? If so, do I need to do my edits in a particular way to make it work? Currently I just select a section and hit "delete" on my keyboard.
