Something really simple is bothering me. I have a M2 Mini now, replacing my old iMac. I bought Audioengine A2 speakers for my desktop. The volume control knob is on the back of one of the satellites. I set it to about 40-50%, halfway. I control the volume with the mediakeys of my keyboard. What bothers me is that I basically have 3 to 4 steps/pips in the MacOS volume overlay (don’t know what’s it called) until it gets too loud. I’d like to have finer control. Best course of action would probably be to turn the Speakers knob down to 20 or 30% and have more range for the volume output on the Mac if that makes sense. would that blur, cheapen the sound or something? How do you deal with this?

I assume you've set the A2 speakers to your preferred maximum volume (or just above it) when your macOS volume is set to maximum.

The main thing here: holding down shift-option while adjusting the macOS volume keys gives 4x finer control of the volume.

I have fine control of the Audio on My Mac Studio from My Keychron keyboard. I also have the App SoundSource 5 loaded this app allows independent volume control of individual applications, a graphic equalizer, plus it has options like an output boost to allow you to adjust the input volume levels. This is a handy thing to have to even up your master volume between amps and such.
