I made a playlist, so if I’m walking or doing chores out in the barn, I can just leave my phone and use my watch/airpods.

About how many songs would be reasonable to have on a playlist?

Or, how can I check to see how much space I’m using on my watch to know how much room I have for more music?

That's kind of a tough question, as songs are different lengths, etc, but I have a playlist that is 303 songs, which would play for about 17 and a half hours, and still have plenty of room for several podcasts, etc and apps. I would honestly say your watch's battery would die before you could listen to all of the songs you can have on there. You might want some sleep sometime close to that 17 hour limit too.. :)

To find out what space is being used, go to the watch app on your phone > My Watch> General> About. Here you'll find all the info on your watch (songs, photos, applications, storage capacity, storage available........) You get the picture.

I would say you can get a few hundred songs on your watch.
