Sorry if this was already mentioned but when using the turn by turn navigation in ios6, are the maps (and POIs) preloaded or are they being downloaded real time through 3G? In other words do you need sn internet connection to use this?

You need an internet connection. There is not yet an offline mode.

They don't even give you an option to pre-fetch the data in case you lose signal?

Nope, but one user reported you continue to get voice prompts to turn, but no map data.
