16 GB $400. Looks and runs fine, it's on 4.2.1. I know I still can't get untethered. Shoud I buy it?

Can you get by until iphone 5 in the summer? If the 4s unlockable it'll at least have good resale.

im with him. it would suck but grab like a used 3gs if your even thinking about upgrading come june or whatever

I am with the other guys/gals, I would either wait or buy a cheap 3GS until iPhone5 comes out or another iPhone4 with 4.1 on it.

If you are with the original carrier then I would buy it. It is a good price and you would struggle to get a good 3GS for that price.

If you need unlock you may want to consider if you are prepared to wait for an unlock which is not presently available for that phone.

I would wait;

1 ) See how the VZW iPhone 4 stacks up in terms of network vs AT&T

2 ) iPhone 5 really is less than half a cycle away ... I'd go with a cheap 3GS or 3G if you REALLY want an iPhone to hold you over for the iPhone 5.

Funny how everyone is telling him to wait 6+ months for the next iphone.
Maybe people want to use and enjoy the iphone 4 right now.
Not everyone buys everything when it first comes out and waits a year for the newer model.

OP, what phone do you have now? That made a difference for me. I had an LG Dare (don't remind me) and couldn't wait 2 months for the iPhone 4, so I bought a new 3GS 32gig. This time around, though, I'll wait for June/July.

For $400 I'd go for it.
You can get your money back and probably more in 5-6 months if you decide to sell it and upgrade.

yeah, plus by then there will probably be an unlock for it. You could probably Jailbreak it too so that'll add some value $ to it. For $400 i'd say get it for sure. I went from a 3g white 16gb to a 32gb iphone 4 and never looked back. It's so much better, clearer and all. Well worth the $$

LOL, No Joke! I'd wait, esp with all the talk of the improvements...iPhone 4 has antenna issues, ergonomic issues, glass scratching and breaking issues, etc....

Seriously? Ergonomic issues? Wow.

It's funny when people say "antenna\glass\breaking" ... it's evidence they're 100% influenced by the media, because the fact of the matter is the antenna is a non issue, the glass scratching\breaking is no worse than any other smartphone. Take any $500 smartphone and drop it from 5 feet onto cement, and see if it holds up any better (and don't refer to a 5 year old blackberry, they don't build ANY phones like that anymore).

But congrats on making up ... err I mean coming up with a new one in the "ERGONOMIC ISSUES" haha.

What are you waiting for - you know you want it so just buy the damn phone. You won't regret it!

no no no, wrong wrong wrong.

Save a lot of money and get an iPhone 3G.

iPhone 5 is gonna be worthless once iPhone 6 (LTE) comes out so just wait like 18 months.

I don't see any harm in buying a contract-free iPhone 4 now, especially if the OP doesn't currently have an iPhone. He should easily be able to recoup his $400 in June if he wants to upgrade to the new model, and meanwhile he'll get to enjoy an iPhone practically for free for 6 months.

The only situation in which I'd really recommend against buying an iPhone 4 now is if he were going to use his upgrade eligibility and lock himself into a new two-year contract. Buying this phone and using it on an existing AT&T account will have no effect on how soon he can get an iPhone 5.
