Forgive me for asking a question that I fear will be answered by someone who has the right combination of keywords in their search, but I've been unable to find a definitive answer.

Is the AC Adapter used with the clamshell iBook the same as, say a Powerbook G3 Lombard, or the later Powerbook/iBook G4 style?

I purchased my first clamshell the other day but it does not include an AC adapter, so wanted to get one headed my way so it would arrive around the same time as the clamshell.

Thanks for the assistance!

The clamshell uses the older 'yo-yo' style, not the later G4 'brick'.

I just checked on my chargers and my G3 charger actually has a larger diameter barrel jack than the G4, so it won't work. My guess is that was probably done so people couldn't use the wrong charger for their machine.

Appreciate the input so far. :)
I was mainly hoping it used the same charger as the G3 Lombard Powerbook, as I already have one of those.

This answer makes me more hopeful, as my Lombard's charger has a larger barrel jack than my G4.

Any G3 power adapter will work. They are all 45W and have the same size barrel jack. There are three main types: the YoYo as above, sometimes bundled with the Lombard/Pismo but mostly accompanying the Clamshell

the flat black power brick that came with the Wallstreets and sort of recalled due to not being quite safe, although I have never had a problem with the ones I have.

and the older larger grey power brick, where you wrap the cable around the brick lengthwise.

These go back to the 1400/3400 series.

Avoid the chargers for the 5300 series as those have a much narrower barrel although superficially they look the same as the chargers for the 1400/3400 series.

Beware, as there are actually two different Yoyo designs. The earlier one (1999, 2000) uses the G3 barrel but those from 2001 actually share the narrower G4 barrel.

When I had a chargerless G3 Clamshell I spliced a 3.5mm stereo audio jack onto one of the later iBook/Powerbook chargers. The wiring diagram is online somewhere.

I’ve done the same with success.

I had a spare, unusable 45w G4-style adapter which had a damaged cable on the 24v side, so I cut it back before the damage then soldered on a 3.5mm headphone jack which I picked up for less than 50c from my local electronics store.

It works fine on my PowerBook G3s, clamshell iBook and PowerBook 1400

Thank you so much! That is exactly what I needed to know. So I already have one laying around from my Lombard then. Thanks all!

Snow ibooks g3 also gave same narrow barrel as ibook g4.

As for charger back in the day I wentvthrough several yoyo adapters. They kept breaking or shorting. Got a cheap lombard and pismo. After I broke the pismo by accifentally spillung coke on it j got rid if both. I cant remember if I had the large black brick also. But I heard about the recall.

I just got a graphite m2453 clamshell complete working kaptop off ebay 50 buck with free shipping. Never gad one back in the day. One of the guys at community college had a blueberry he used mostly os9 for video clips and light web.

Mine is just needs a new os 9 install. Otherwise all good. But no adapter included. So I got this. Hope it works.

I also wanted the ones with video out but those are not cheap so this will do.

There were this. But first is missing hard drive and who knows what else was tampered with.

Or this but its also parts.

There was even a blueberry with missing keyboard and airport card and ram shield for parts. It booted but still the keyboard is impossible to find. And he wanted 27 + 28 shipping so 55 total.

Are you still around? I was wondering how you wired it, where + and - go… Is the outer ring just a shield?

I can't locate the original reference site I used when wiring it up, but found this on google which should help.

The 3.5mm headphone jack in question is called a "TRS" , which stands for Tip, Ring, Sleeve (wikipedia article).

In the case for our power adapter;
1. Sleeve: +24V
2. Ring: GND / neg.
3. Tip: not connected
4. Outer shield is 0.5MΩ

Wire up the internals of the existing cable to your replacement connector and use a multimeter to test the T, R, and S components to match the above.

Regarding the outer shield, it is there to both protect from shorting, and to show the charge indicator light, but in the case of the clamshell, the charge indicator light is in the power jack on the machine rather than on the adapter connection end, so not needed to determine charge status.
