I sent out several iCal invitations to outlook users, google calendar users, and mac users. Accepted invites from google calendar users get added automatically to iCal and a green check mark appears next to the persons name. However, invites sent to outlooks users do not get added automatically and when I double click the .ics file that is sent back to me after acceptance no green checkmark is added to the persons name in iCal. I have seen people having issues with the "not automatically added" part but when they double click it, it usually works. In my case no matter what I do I do not have that final acceptance shown by the green checkmark. Let me know if anyone else has run across this problem.
