Jailbreaking in essence is exactly that, allowing root access. In non-jailbroken state, you're stuck in jail (Media section).

I love iPhone Drive... it's well worth the $10 in my opinion. You can even grab music, movies, tv shows and notes right off of it without any hacking.

Hmmm, maybe that's how much I paid... I can't remember... perhaps they were having a sale on it at the time... I don't know. It's still worth $20 even.
