Accessing another mac from another place?

I was looking into Apple's Remote Desktop application but it seems only working on local networks? Or did i misunderstood that?

I need to be able to observe/ operate one of my mac's at another office for when i'm home via my MBP.

Do you have recommendations?

There are VPN applications going all the way back to Timbuktu Pro and PC Anywhere for the Mac. Free VPN utilities are available on the major websites dedicated to Mac software.
