Accessing HD connected to Time Machine

I have an external hard drive connected to my AirPort via USB. I used to be able to access the hard drive, even when connected to my work network via UPN, but the VPN connection was updated, and now I can only connect to the hard drive when I do not have the VPN connection running.

Is there a way to make the HD accessible even with VPN running? Can't I configure the HD to access it directly via afp?

Any tips would be appreciated!
