How can you change read only permissions on an external hard drive on a Mac?

How can I effectively break down the barriers between Windows and OS X to solve the communication problems between the Mac system and NTFS, providing full read and write access to Windows NTFS partitions under OS X?

Any free software? or workaround?
thanks

NTFS (Windows NT File System)
  • Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
  • Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
  • To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, install Paragon (approx $20)
  • AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
  • Maximum file size: 16 TB
  • Maximum volume size: 256TB
  • You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.

If your Ext HD is made by Seagate - you can download a free piece of software from them to allow NTFS read/write on mac.

(I think its their version of Paragon but it will only work with their drives)

You will of course have to reformat the drive after installation of software.

Yes it's Seagate but formatting may not be an option as I already have almost 1TB worth of data on it.

Thanks. Looks expensive though.

Sorry Tulani - forget the re format, I wasn't thinking clearly ( it was too early to be that early ).

If your Ext HD is already formatted as NTFS, you needn't reformat it.

Just go to the Seagate link I put up earlier and download the software. Install it & you should have read/write access to your drive.

Let me give it a try. Thanks
