Accessing PC files from the Mac

I am having trouble connecting my mac to the pc, when I try to connect to the server and enter the pcs ip address it says connection failed and the ip does not exit...etc. I've followed the guide on here to and on http://www.myfirstmac.com/index.php/mac/articles/how-do-i-share-files-between-my-mac-and-pc/P80/

Does anyone have ideas why this is happening...? My PC is the desktop connected straight to the modem and my macbook connected wirelessly through the router.

Are you actually connecting your PC directly to your modem or router? Also, not sure if you missed it or not, but try this guide: http://macs.about.com/od/filesharing/ss/file-sharing-win7-snow-leopard.htm

Sorry for the late reply but yeah pc is connected to the modem directly and my mbp is connected to the router so all on the same network. Btw my pc is running windows XP...
