This is an interesing read: https://developer.apple.com/accessories/Accessory-Design-Guidelines.pdf
Pages 82 ff. describe the MagSafe specs. According to those specs the magnet ring has a diameter of 541 mm (~2.1 inches), which probably means that the MagSafe charger is about that size. There are also detailed specs for the magnetic flux and force, which unfortunately I have no idea what they mean in actual practice.
Apparently the magnets have alternating polarities (figures 23-3 and 23-4). That means that you can stick two iPhones together back-to-back (as suggested in another thread) in certain angles.
All MagSafe cases are required to be compatible with the MagSafe charger and with the credit-card wallet (section 23.1.1).
