I have accidentally corrupted the Image Capture app and it now does not work. I cannot find a way to re-install this app except to re-install Lion itself.

And this is where I have a problem. Even though Lion in installed in my Macbook Pro, I cannot find it on my Purchase history despite trying the hold down the Options key while pressing Purchase method. But on the Lion page itself, I see Installed instead of Buy.

I then tried to do a Lion recovery on my Macbook but when asked to enter my Apple ID, it said that my Apple ID has not purchased Lion before.

Can anyone shed any light on why this is happening? Will not having Image Capture ruin my life? But I do hate having unresolved problems on my Mac.

Thanks.

Image Capture belongs to the System. It cannot be accidentally deleted unless you are running as root--which you should not do. If you trashed the utility, then you would have to Empty Trash to actually delete it.

Other applications including scanning applications and iPhoto rely on Image Capture. So, it is kind of important that you get it back.

  • What exactly leads you to believe that you deleted Image Capture?
  • Have you done a Spotlight search of your hard drive to locate the utility?

In a hasty moment of housekeeping my Mac, I accidentally clicked on Show Package Content on Image Capture and moved the folder to Trash! Of course, I went immediately to Trash to put the folder back but it wouldn't put it back in the proper place, and the Contents folder is now residing in the Applications folder, not where Image Capture can get to. Image Capture is still now greyed out.

I managed finally to re-install Lion but it didn't appear to help at all. Grr...

Solved The Problem

Just to let everyone know the problem is resolved. Managed to drag the Contents folder from trash back into the app. Thank you to Apple support for helping with this one.

Two pieces of advice I'd like to leave on this thread.

First have a back up, apple provides Time Machine just for this type of issue. If you had a TM backup, you'd probably not even need to post here, but rather restore the app.

Second is house cleaning, all too often we see threads here by members who were overly aggressive in their deleting. If you're running out of space, consider a larger drive instead of trying to delete a handful of files.

TM was the first thing I tried to re-install the app but it didn't work as I kept getting the message that "the app could not be changed or modified as it is needed by OS X". Which I thought was pointless but perhaps it was another operator error!

You are right however about the over-aggressive housekeeping. It wasn't a space problem (plenty of it) but just hate having apps that I don't need or use anymore. I have learnt my lesson now. I really should keep a list of all the apps that comes with the OS X so as not to create the same problem for myself.

That's odd that TM wouldn't let you restore it. Did you try manually copying it from the sparse image on your Time Machine volume.

I know its a moot point since you solved the problem, I'm just curious :)

Help!!!! I REALLY deleted Image Capture

Ok, so my problem is on my older model iMac computer at work/the office that uses snow leopard/ OS X 10.6.8. I use Image Capture EVERY day and love and NEED all the functions/tools.

Yesterday it quit recognizing my Brother MFC 7820N printer AND my HP PhotoSmart... Usually it will not recognize one or the other, not both. In those cases I would always solve the problem by unplugging the USB's and restarting or a variation of some similar tricks.

So... after I tried time and again my old tricks with unplugging & restarting, I thought maybe it was a needed software update or I could re-install the printer drivers from the Brother website (Brother is the more important printer, I can do without the HP). So, no updates were available for my computer and reinstalling the driver's didn't work.

Then for some reason, I thought I would delete the Image Capture Application itself. I thought the app came to be on my computer in the first place after I installed a Brother Printer Driver when I first got my iMac. So I thought deleting the app and re-installing the driver again would perhaps solve the problem (I know... idiotic...). So I Deleted the app, then emptied the trash, permanently deleting it...

I don't use time machine on my work computer, never have. Probably not very smart either. But my external for back up is busy with my home/personal MacBook.

Can anyone please help me? File sharing or something... anything?

I know this was posted years ago, but any chance I can access that same file for Image Capture???
